Can I Use My Sling For Nursing?

Yes. Follow these instructions to breastfeed discretely using your baby sling

After putting on your baby sling, hold baby facing your bare shoulder, sitting on your forearm
Pull outer edge over over your forearm and your baby's feet
Gently drop your baby into the pocket. If you baby is long enough, the feet will stick out the bottom
Guide baby's head to the same side as your bare shoulder, laying down with the curved seam following his spine.
Lift baby with your bare arm and adjust the sling to a comfortable spot with your other arm. You may want to slide the shoulder seam further down your arm while nursing.
With the sling pulled completely over the baby's head, you are now ready to begin nursing!

Putting On Your Sling

Identify the curved seam (bottom) and folded shoulder seam (top with HugaMonkey Tag)
Place curved seam over hip that you want your baby to be on
Stick same hand through the sling
Pull up and over the head on opposite shoulder of hip
The HugaMonkey tag should be on the outside on your arm
The seamed edge should be against neck
The shoulder seam should be on your shoulder blade
Now HugaMonkey!

Our Sling Making Process

It begins with a hunt for fabric: not too heavy, not too itchy, not to boring, not too flimsy.

When something makes the cut, it’s on to the production floor. We use a single cut of fabric to keep the sling’s strength. The edges are four stitch over locked so they won’t fray.

The single sided sling is then roll-hemmed for that beautiful finished appearance. The reversible baby sling gets serged together, then topstitched for a superior strength, attractive edge.

We fold and sew at the shoulder so you don’t ever have to worry about adjusting or slipping.

Finally, we finish the edge with a four stitch over lock, then a French seam, then a topstitch.

That’s a lot of stitching! But that’s what it takes to make a HugaMonkey baby sling that will last through all of your kids and still look fantastic! read more »

It was May, 2002. My first baby, a gorgeous gal, graced us and I was given my first baby sling – a hand-me-down from some era past. The concept was fabulous. The execution was atrocious. It had padding around the sides, making it bulky and cumbersome. The rings and long tail were awkward and excessive. And the fabric was ug-ug-ugly! What’s a hot mama to do?

Being a master seamstress, I set to work and came up with a simple, pared-down pouch. No padding meant it could be tossed in the diaper bag. No rings or tail meant no adjusting or worry of slipping. And it was cute to boot! Friends and family began asking for them. Then came the perfect strangers! So I upped the ante.

Five years and nine production models later, the HugaMonkey baby sling is ready for you. Picking your sling size is easy! Simply follow these steps and you'll be Huggin' in no time!

Standard Sizing:

Start by placing one end of a measuring tape on the top of your shoulder on your shirt seam. Using a measuring tape will give you the best measurement and the best fit.
Bring the measuring tape loosely across your body to the top of your opposite hip.
Don't pull it tight. You want it loose across your body.
Use your measurement to find your HugaMonkey size on the chart.

A Common Worry & Misconception About Baby Slings

"People often express concern that excessive holding or wearing will "spoil" a child, make the child overly dependent on the parent or hinder a child's development. This has not been borne out by research. Research on kangaroo care has shown that premature infants (Feldman, 2002) and newborns (Ferber, 2004) who are held sleep more, cry less, grow faster and get sick less than babies who are given "standard" care with minimal holding.

In addition, a study which specifically examined the effects of increased in-arms and in-carrier time on infants found that babies whose parents increased holding by about 3 hours per day cried significantly less, spent more time in a quiet alert state and fed more often. (Hunziker, 1986)"

How Sacagawea Would Have Carried Her Baby

I found this neat little anthropological/historical tidbit at the US Mint:

According to Irving Anderson of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, the Lewis and Clark journals are very vague in documenting how Sacagawea attended to Jean Baptiste. In a June 29, 1805, entry, Lewis refers to "the bier in which the woman carries her child." No physical description of the "bier" is provided, but there is a reference elsewhere to mosquito netting as a "bier."

Further, Sacagawea lived among the Hidatsa beginning around the age of 11, and although it is not conclusive that Sacagawea adopted Hidatsa customs, she could reasonably have learned to carry Jean Baptiste slung from her shoulder, as was the Hidatsa custom.

When I was an anthropology student at the University of Utah I studied quite a bit about maternal health and economy. Most of our subject material was of African tribal mothers who are twice as productive when harvesting mongongo nuts then mothers who held the baby on the hip with one arm.

There are dozens of sites out there cataloguing the various benefits of baby wearing. Baby slings provide parent/child bonding, leg and muscle development, a calmer child, reduced post partum depression, and on and on and on. These are all very important, and I encourage parents and care givers to read up.

However, I wanted to take a slightly different approach. In this cyber world of emoticons and acronyms, I'm going to do my darnedest to make these pixels express my feelings about baby slings and why I do it.

Lessons In Baby Wearing

Sling Sizing
I have found that it is handy having a couple of different sizes. I use a small for my newborn baby and a medium for my 20 month old child. I also have found that it is fun to have a couple of different colors so that I can match the sling with my outfit and I feel like I’m all put together!

Baby Wearing Learning Curve
It did take me a few times to learn just exactly where to put the sling on my shoulder to make it the most comfortable. It took me a few times as well to figure out how the baby would be the most comfortable in the sling. But, I got it figured out and I love it! This sling is easy to adjust to whatever position you want your child to be in. It is easy to put on and it only takes a minute versus some slings and wraps and baby carriers that take 5 minutes plus to put on.

Breast Feeding
I have learned how to comfortably nurse the baby while wearing the sling. You should see it, it’s great! I was nursing my baby while I was doing makeup at a Mary Kay Party. I have also nursed while fixing dinner or doing braids in my daughters hair. I have to admit that it is always better to nurse without the sling, but with 4 other children it is sometimes necessary and always convenient, and it works great!

HugaMonkey's Armed Forces Story

Clint Eagar our CMH, chief monkey hugger, and co-founder grew up in Las Vegas just down the runway from Nellis Air Force Base. As a little monkey he loved to watch the Thunderbirds take off. He vowed to become a fighter pilot. When he was about 9 years old, his right eye was critically damaged. Because of that, he was not able to become a pilot. This is his way of paying tribute to all the top guns that fly the skies, crawl the trenches or sail the ocean blue in defense of our freedom. Recently HugaMonkey received an email from a fellow monkey hugger in regards to our organic baby slings. Here’s what they had to say:

Just fyi...the 60% cotton in the Kaufman Panda prints is not actually "organic" cotton. They call them green prints because of the bamboo. Just thought I'd let you know before someone says something about false advertisement. You can call Kaufman's quality control to confirm this. Thanks

My back aches, is this normal?

Any way you carry a baby, whether with a baby carrier or with your arms, is going to put added stress on your body. It takes time for your muscles to adapt to new carrying positions.

There are a few things you can do to help ease back strain. The first is fit. Does the baby sling seem to fit well. Is the baby's bottom resting at your navel?

Second, check your position. The tag should be resting on your shoulder blade, with the baby's bum in the curved seam. Position the baby sling so that it's a little off your shoulder, more to the side and pulling across your body rather than on top of your shoulder and pulling down on your body.

Third is posture. It's very, very important to keep a tall, straight spine. Practice rolling your shoulders back and moving your shoulder blades down your spine. Hunching and slouching can be very detrimental to you back, with or without a sling. Do some back exercises to strengthen these new muscles you're using. As with all baby carriers, take a break when you feel tired. Switch shoulders, change the baby's position, sit down. Babies are endurance exercises!

Keep trying and as the baby moves from laying down to a sitting up position, a lot of the weight will be distributed to your hips.

Do you recommend purchasing a sling while I am pregnant?

Yes. Choosing the right size while pregnant is easy and fun! Instead of measuring across the front of your body, you'll measure across your back. Just follow these simple steps. read more »

Grab a friend you trust with a measuring tape and have the little monkey place one end of the tape on the top of your shoulder on your shirt seam. Measuring by yourself will not be as fun or as accurate if you have a helper.
Have your helper bring the measuring tape loosely across your back to the top of your opposite hip. Measure loosely to take into consideration your chest size .
Use your measurement to find your HugaMonkey size on the chart. Your sling and non-pregnant fitted t-shirt size are usually similar.

How do I figure out my baby sling size?

Most people's sling and t-shirt sizes are the same. Even though it's not precise, it's a good start.

If you measure between sizes, get the size that most corresponds with your upper body type.

Putting On Your Sling

Identify the curved seam (bottom) and folded shoulder seam (top with HugaMonkey Tag)
Place curved seam over hip that you want your baby to be on
Stick same hand through the sling
Pull up and over the head on opposite shoulder of hip
The HugaMonkey tag should be on the outside on your arm
The seamed edge should be against neck
The shoulder seam should be on your shoulder blade
Now HugaMonkey!
