Recently HugaMonkey received an email from a fellow monkey hugger in regards to our organic baby slings. Here’s what they had to say:
Just fyi...the 60% cotton in the Kaufman Panda prints is not actually "organic" cotton. They call them green prints because of the bamboo. Just thought I'd let you know before someone says something about false advertisement. You can call Kaufman's quality control to confirm this. Thanks
I replied with the following, but their email address didn’t work:
Thanks for the heads up. Here is some info from Robert Kaufman's website that you might find interesting:
We are pleased to present greenSTYLE by Robert Kaufman, fabric options created from environmentally-friendly materials and fabrication methods. These textiles are organic, sustainable and low-impact dyed, leaving less (or no) harmful waste and making the most sustainable and natural use of the Earth's precious resources. Robert Kaufman GreenStyle
After a couple weeks someone left the following comment on the Tangerine Leaf baby sling:
organic ??
Neither one of the components of this fabric is certified organic. It is wrong to claim so in your advertising.
We've never claimed that our slings were certified organic. We've been careful to use the general term "organic" to mean that our baby slings are made with earth happy fabric and have a smaller impact on the environment.
Currently, all HugaMonkey baby slings are made with Robert Kaufman fabrics. I contacted Robert Kaufman to check if by chance the fabric is certified organic. I found out that the HugaMonkey "organic" baby slings are eco-friendly and printed with low impact dyes but not certified organic. Does that mean they aren't AWESOME? Not at all! Because they're made with sustainable resources they're a more balanced baby sling and a great way to go green!
When we use the word "organic" to describe our baby slings, we don't mean they are certified organic, rather we mean that they are eco-friendly and healthy choices to carrying your baby.
Certified organic means it meets standards of a 3rd party such as Guaranteed Certification Services, SKAL and Quality Assurance International. HugaMonkey slings meet certain standards as well and are "made with environmentally-friendly materials and fabrication methods leaving less (or no) harmful waste." Don’t worry. Our organic slings are a healthy, eco-friendly choice for you and your baby.
We never meant to mislead anyone and I'm sorry if we did. We want to be an upfront and honest company so please feel free to leave comments below. I hope this explanation clears things up and if you have any questions, drop me (Dylan) a line.
